22 Jun Monday culture: Google Art Project

Looking to bring a little culture into your day? The Google Art Project is an online platform where anyone with an internet connection can access more than 32,000 masterpieces from 46 galleries around the world.

In partnership with museums including The Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Uffizi in Florence, Google has reproduced artworks at very high quality. Each partner museum also selected one artwork to be captured as a gigapexel image, with over one billion pixels.

Google Street View was used to provide a virtual walk through of galleries, and users can create their own gallery of favourite works.

The project is part of a Google policy where employees at the giant are encouraged to spend 20% of their time working on a project of interest or innovation.

For anyone wanting a daily dose of inspiration, and who browses in Chrome, an extension is available to fill each new browser window or tab with art.
