21 Aug Bauhaus sand castles

With all the beaches lining the coast of Australia, it has been every child’s dream to build the best sand castle possible. Most of the time, the turn of the tide beat us and washed the sculpture away before completion.

New York-based sculptor Calvin Seibert recently completed a series of his famous “Sand Castles” on the beaches of Hawaii. The angular style seems to be influenced by the Bauhaus movement of the early 1900s.

Calvin uses skills acquired during his 30 years as a sculptor’s apprentice, and from construction and basic carpentry, to construct his masterpieces. The exact mechanics of how he controls the sand and water, however, is a mystery.

Building sandcastles is a bit of a test. Nature will always be against you and time is always running out. Having to think fast and to bring it all together in the end is what I like about it.
